The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

Dún Briste, framed through the mouth of a sea cave at Downpatrick Head in County Mayo. The sea stack stands about 50 metres offshore, separated from the mainland since 1393 when the natural arch connecting it collapsed. The remains of a church still sit on top.

I wanted the cave itself to do the compositional work here, its rough edges forming a natural frame around the stack. A tidal pool in the foreground catches a reflection of both the rock and the sky above it, giving the image a sense of depth that pulls you through from dark to light. Overcast conditions with a partial cloud break provided soft, even illumination across the whole scene.

Converted to black and white, the tonal range runs from the deep shadow of the cave walls right through to the bright diffused sky beyond. It simplifies everything down to shape and texture, which is really what this place demands!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
