Three rocks in wet sand, and I knew the shot before the tripod was even level. That never happens!
Keem Beach sits at the western end of Achill Island, tucked into a steep bowl of cliffs where the road drops in tight bends that make you wonder if you've taken a wrong turn. You haven't. I was there as the tide pushed in under a heavy, unbroken sky. Grey-purple cloud pressing down, no warmth in the light at all. The rocks formed a natural arrangement across the foreground, different sizes, different distances from the lens, and the composition just fell into place.
I set up for a long exposure to smooth the incoming water around the base of each rock and to pull detail from the wet sand. When a tide moves across a flat beach like this, it leaves fine channels and patterns in the surface. The long exposure turns that sand pale and reflective against dark stone. That contrast was what I was after.
There's a faint outline of land on the horizon, just visible through haze. I folded it into the frame because it gives the image a sense of depth that would otherwise be empty sky meeting empty sea. Achill has a difficult history, famine and emigration and hard living, and when the sky comes down heavy over those cliffs the place feels more honest. I prefer it like this.
