Letters from the Landscape

In 1393, a storm ripped this column of rock away from the mainland. There were people on it when it happened. They had to be rescued by rope, and the remains of a building are still visible on the top if you look carefully enough.

I've photographed Dún Briste more times than I can count, always from the cliff edges at Downpatrick Head, always looking across at roughly the same angle. The layered sediment bands are remarkable from there, but you never quite grasp the full isolation of the thing. This was the first time I'd worked it at sunset from above, and it changed everything. The low sun was partially diffused through cloud, throwing deep golden-red light across a calm Atlantic. The sea was so flat that the light pooled and spread around the base of the stack.

What struck me most was how that warm light picked out every single layer in the rock face. Each band caught the sun differently, and the whole structure seemed to glow. Solid. Ancient. Completely alone, with nothing between it and North America. I'd spent years on those cliffs thinking I knew this sea stack well. Turns out I'd only been seeing half of it!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
