Benwee Head, Co. Mayo
Prints are made to order, so I can't take one back just because you've changed your mind, but if it arrives damaged or isn't what you ordered, I'll replace it at no cost. You can swap it within 30 days, though you'd cover the return postage.
I'd never set foot on this coastline before, and the drive out along the narrow roads of north Mayo should have been the first clue. The further west I went, the fewer cars I passed. By the time I reached Benwee Head, it was just me and the wind. Plenty of wind.
The cliffs here are enormous. They drop straight into the Atlantic with real force, and from above, the scale becomes almost absurd. Sea stacks lined up along the base of the headland like broken teeth. Rain squalls were passing through to the south, and between them the sun would break low across the whole place for a few minutes before everything went dark again. I spent most of my time getting progressively colder, waiting for those windows to align. My hands were numb. Worth it.
This panoramic frame works because of those squalls. They give it depth and movement that a clear sky wouldn't have provided. The light was changing every few minutes, and patience was the only real skill involved. That and not getting blown sideways.
North Mayo doesn't get the attention it deserves. People flock to Kerry and West Cork, and rightly so, but this coastline is remarkable. The whole Erris peninsula is. It's one of my favourite images from the entire Atlantic Light project, and I hope it sends a few people north to see it for themselves!
