I don't really do towns. My work is almost entirely about remote places, empty coastlines, lighthouses with no one around for miles. So a Ferris wheel on a seaside promenade is a departure, to say the least.
I was in Tramore walking the beach as the light was fading. The tide was well out, leaving that wide expanse of wet sand catching whatever colour remained in the sky. The Ferris wheel was spinning against the last of the blue hour, and the promenade lights were just coming into their own. I set up the tripod on the sand and started working with long exposures. The wheel's motion drew those circular trails of light while the buildings along the seafront held steady. That contrast between movement and stillness is what made the frame.
No three-hour hike to get there. No waiting for a specific tide or celestial alignment. I was just walking, saw something I liked, and stayed with it.
What drew me in was the colour. That saturated blue of late twilight against the warm carnival lights is a combination you don't get with rocks and sea and sky. They rarely glow orange and spin! There's a playfulness to this image I enjoy precisely because it's so different from what I normally do.
